Dr. Sudharshan Sathiyamoorthy

Senior Quantitative Specialist

Dr. Sudharshan Sathiyamoorthy is a seasoned quantitative specialist and investment professional with nearly two decades of investment experience, specializing in the search, approval and monitoring of alternative investment managers and applying quantitative analysis to the investment process.  He has worked at some of Canada’s most respected institutions and brings a unique blend of academic rigor and industry expertise, having previously spent a decade in academia.

Most recently, Dr. Sathiyamoorthy served as Head of Manager Diligence at Richter Family Office, one of Canada’s oldest and largest multi-family offices, where he also served as Chair of the Investment Committee.  He oversaw the due diligence of over 50 funds across multiple asset classes, including private credit, private equity, and secondaries.  During his tenure, Dr. Sathiyamoorthy institutionalized the firm’s manager due diligence process and designed a comprehensive quantitative framework for asset allocation and portfolio construction.

Before Richter Family Office, Dr. Sathiyamoorthy worked at Alignvest Management Corporation, a $1 billion investment manager, where he developed and managed its external manager program.  He led the firm’s investment due diligence process across multiple strategies, authored and presented investment recommendations to the Investment Committee, and collaborated with operations and risk teams on funding decisions.

Prior to Alignvest, Dr. Sathiyamoorthy was an Associate Portfolio Manager at the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB), one of the world’s largest public pension funds at ~C$600 bn AUM, where he initially covered reinsurance and commodity managers before expanding to discretionary macro and multi-strategy managers.  He led a working group to assess Insurance Linked Securities (ILS) as an investment opportunity, producing a strategic paper that guided CPPIB’s entry into the asset class.  Following this, Dr. Sathiyamoorthy led the due diligence and subsequent investment of nearly $1 billion into ILS funds.

Dr. Sathiyamoorthy began his alternative investment career at Diversified Global Asset Management (DGAM), a ~$6 bn Toronto based fund of funds later acquired by The Carlyle Group.  At DGAM, he conducted due diligence on various funds, evaluated performance and return attribution, and demonstrated the firm’s proprietary risk system to clients, highlighting its critical role in portfolio construction.

Dr. Sathiyamoorthy started his investment career at RBC Capital Markets, gaining experience through rotations in investment banking, equity research, and trading.

Throughout his career, Dr. Sathiyamoorthy has applied a high level of academic rigor, influenced by his extensive academic background.  He holds a B.Sc. in Math and Physics (High Distinction) and a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Toronto, where he also was on the Varsity Chess Team.  Dr. Sathiyamoorthy also has an MBA (Dean’s Honor List) from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario.  Additionally, he studied Meteorology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was a Post-Doctoral Investigator at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts. Prior to that, Dr. Sathiyamoorthy was a Research Assistant at the University of Toronto. His work has been published in leading journals and he has presented his research at conferences in North America and Europe.
