Stephen Faughnan
Chief Risk Officer and Managing Director of Finance & OperationsStephen Faughnan has over 25 years of experience in finance, operations, risk management, accounting and tax advisory across private credit, private equity, secondary funds, ’40 Act funds, and other regulated fund structures. He currently serves as Chief Risk Officer and Managing Director of Finance & Operations at Star Mountain, where he is involved in all aspects of the firm’s finance, operations, risk management, tax and treasury functions. In addition, he leads strategic firmwide operational initiatives impacting both the firm and its investment vehicles.
Prior to Star Mountain, Mr. Faughnan served as Managing Director & Head of Operations at Siguler Guff, a multi-strategy private equity, private credit, and secondary investments firm with over $15 billion in assets under management. During his tenure, Mr. Faughnan was the Chair of the operations committee, member of the valuation committee and held the position of Chief Information Security Officer. His work also included reporting and interacting with minority shareholders like BNY Mellon ($2 trillion in AUM). Other responsibilities included overseeing the firm’s daily operations across its investment vehicles, including risk management, fund finance, operational due diligence, regulatory implementation, cybersecurity and treasury/liquidity management.
Previously, Mr. Faughnan spent over 12 years at Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GSAM), where he served as a Vice President and held a variety of roles spanning finance, operations and risk management. His work covered complex roles and regulated fund structures, including being based in the firm’s New York, Bangalore, Seoul, and Tokyo offices with multinational operating and regulatory environments. He was also involved with managing integrations of various GSAM acquisitions of other asset management firms, management company reporting, fund accounting, risk management, portfolio valuations, fund operations and regulatory compliance.
Mr. Faughnan began his career as a tax consultant at Deloitte & Touche where he advised clients on their global tax planning and compliance needs.
He holds a Master of Business Administration, with concentrations in Finance, International Finance and Global Management from The New York University Leonard N. Stern School of Business. Mr. Faughnan earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Pace University on a full tuition Presidential Scholarship where he graduated Magna Cum Laude, with a concentration in Public Accounting.
